Christian Approaches – Sexuality

Christians and Sex. Not a happy marriage? From St Augustine to Victorian Britain, the Christian Churches have seemed to look down on sex as bordering on the sinful and a necessary evil, full of temptation.



Yet the Anglican wedding service dares to pronounce: “with my body, I thee worship” and the late Pope John Paul II devoted much energy to what he called the “theology of the body” – how sexuality lived out according to God’s law is a beautiful thing which gives honour to God.




Does the Bible offer commandments or recommendations for our sexual behaviour? Why does it seem to forbid certain practices? Why do different churches vary widely in their approaches to divorce, homosexuality, contraception and in vitro fertilisation?
